Climb aboard a rugged 4×4 and venture beyond the dunes to the hidden corners of the Merzouga region — the Berber village of Khamlia and its Gnaoua music, the abandoned Mfis mines, black volcanic rock formations, a desert oasis, and the nomadic families who still call the Sahara home. Your guide stops wherever the view demands it, ending with a panoramic sweep over the great Erg Chebbi dunes.

Reach a high crest just in time to watch the sun melt into an ocean of sand, the dunes glowing amber then rose then violet. Take the controls of a quad bike or dune buggy and follow your guide along the firm sand corridors and rolling crests at the edge of the Erg Chebbi sea. Strap on a board, hike to the lip of a towering dune, and carve your way down a slope of pure golden sand. Sand-boarding is gloriously simple — your guide shows you the line, and the dunes do the rest. Climb back up for another run, or simply tumble laughing into the soft sand.
